NatHERS Whole of Home Assessment
After the building’s thermal performance is assessed using a NatHERS-accredited tool (such as Hero V5), the model is uploaded for certification and imported into the Whole of Home platform. Thermal performance and building services efficiency are combined to calculate total energy use. If this is less than or equal to the energy use budget, the building qualifies for certification.
Under NCC 2022, NatHERS assessments must include space heating and cooling, hot water systems, pool or spa pumps, cooking, lighting and plug-in appliances and on-site energy generation and storage.
How are Whole of Home Assessments conducted?
There are two Deemed-to-Satisfy pathways to meet Whole of Home requirements for houses and apartments: Elemental Provisions and NatHERS energy rating.
The Elemental Provisions pathway uses prescribed formulas to ensure the building’s Net Equivalent Energy Use does not exceed the Energy Use Budget, with compliance referenced in the NCC. This can be simplified by using the ABCB Whole of Home Calculator.
The NatHERS pathway involves an accredited assessor using a NatHERS tool to develop an optimised solution based on the building’s energy demand and location, often resulting in a more cost-effective outcome.
Whole of Home Assessment rating scale
Once the building’s basic details and service efficiency data are entered, a Whole of Home rating is generated on a scale of 0 to 100. A rating of 100 indicates the building produces as much energy as it consumes, while ratings above 100 show it generates more energy than it uses. For certification under NCC 2022, new houses and townhouses must achieve a minimum rating of 60 and new apartment units must reach at least 50.
