About Section J Reports

The National Construction Code (NCC 2022) establishes consistent standards for building design and construction across Australia, while accommodating regional variations. Section J ensures that all buildings (Class 2–9) meet energy efficiency requirements to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Section J reports are required as part of Development Applications to demonstrate compliance with the NCC. The Section J Report will cover the ‘Deemed to Satisfy’ requirements for the following Parts of the NCC/BCA:

J1: Building Fabric: ceiling/roof, external walls and floors.

J2: Glazing

J3: Building Sealing

J6: Artificial Lighting

About J1V3 Assessments

J1V3 is a software-based assessment for commercial buildings that shows compliance with the NCC’s energy efficiency requirements. By comparing the proposed building’s planned insulation and glazing to a reference building modelled under Section J’s Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions, J1V3 allows greater design flexibility and demonstrates compliance when the proposed building uses less energy.
